We homeschool and my kids already learned about slavery, lynching, segregation, Jim Crow Laws, the KKK, Martin Luther King, the Black Pathers, Emmett Till, the many modern police killings that are discussed in this film and the racist comments of Donald Trump. But after watching it I think she could’ve watched it. I watched this with my 13 year old son but not my 9 year old daughter because of the reviews. That they have the power to positively change these experiences and be real superheros. They must know the fear many kids their age live with in this country. I have marked the age down to 14 since if our kids can take the violence of some popular animation movies, they should also know that such reality can be lurking close behind. Towards the end of the movie is a segment where archival footage of crimes against blacks is played with Trumps hateful speeches during his rallies, it makes you frightfully feel as a current participant in an era that is not bygone by any measure. ALEC remarkably influences the bills and laws focused on sustaining the 'super-predator' narrative. There is a long deliberate focus on the very powerful, corporate-funded and politician supported, American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). It leads us via propagandist movies and election agendas into the continuous rise of incarceration and undermining of any humanistic approach towards Black population, especially the black man. The movie deals with the systematic suppression of Black rights from the time the rights were 'supposed to' exist-the abolition of slavery in 1865 under the 13th Amendment. The sounds of sobs and dismay from the audience did not help the slow and steady crumbling of the perception of a 'free country' I have for the U.S. I could have been put on an extreme roller-coaster and not be more horrified in my first year as a student in this country.
